Abstract:

The active zone of a toroidal cutting tool represents the link between different tool types. By varying of the corner radius (R) of a toroidal end mill, diverse tool shapes from cylindrical end mills up to ball end mills can be created. The dynamic properties of the tool system for the used tool types, toroidal and ball end mills, can be considered as almost identical to those of cylindrical end mills in case of external conditions, such as tool holder, tool diameter, tool overhang length and material remaining equal. Although the tools differ in the shape of the cutting edge, the dynamic compliance and the damping of the system are not affected.
