For reasons of saving mass and total cost, aircraft fuselages mainly based on carbon fibre composites (CFRP) are under development. To achieve their full potential and to satisfy different requirements, multidisciplinary design optimisation (MDO) techniques are investigated for consideration of structural, noise and manufacturing aspects, as well as their interaction. In addition, techniques are discussed to quantitatively model qualitative knowledge related to manufacturing. Representative results are presented which can be generalised to a considerable extent.
