Abstract:

Composite-extruded unidirectionally-reinforced profiles are a novel class of materials for the construction of lightweight structures. They may be fabricated in a flexible and rapid near net shape process. The authors present first advances in the production of composite extrusions reinforced with continuous carbon and alumina fibres. Furthermore, the produced specimens were characterised by examining the interface between matrix and reinforcing element regarding the interface morphology and the potential evolution of intermetallic phases. For this purpose, the authors carried out metallographic investigations focussing on light and electron microscopy.
