Abstract:

The aim of surface reconstruction is to map the surface structure of a real world object to an exact and efficiently computer processable description that meets the demands of designers and draftsmen. The resulting digital models can be stored and modified in CAD systems and can be manufactured via CAM systems and machine tools. The complete process chain from the digitizing process via the mathematical modeling to the machining process is affected by various disturbances. A systematic fault analysis of the surface reconstruction process chain is presented in this article. The influence of the digitizing process, the mathematical modeling of the surface and the machining process is analyzed analytically and practically.
