Abstract:
In order to obtain the lowest weight of a workpiece fulfilling specified requirements, it is crucial to be able to choose from a variety of materials and to combine them. The manufacture of profiles using hybrid materials illustrates such an approach. Within the scope of research activities of the Transregional Collaborative Research Center (SFB/ TR 10), the composite extrusion of aluminum profiles, which are continuously and selectively reinforced by metallic elements like steel wire and steel wire ropes, is being examined. During the research work a stable process was developed which allows to embed continuous reinforcing elements. In this paper, the process principle is shown and an overview of the special tools is given. Furthermore, the influencing factors on the development of the composite are analyzed. Especially the influencing factors on the element positioning like temperature and extrusion speed are examined, based on real size experiments using a 10 MN extrusion press.
